چکیده
One of the most robust qualities of our visual world is the scale invariance of natural images. Not only has scaling been found in different visual environments, but the phenomenon also appears to be calibration-independent. This paper proposes a simple property of natural images which explains this robustness: they are collages of regions corresponding to statistically independent "objects". Evidence is provided for these objects having a power-law distribution of sizes within images, from which follows scaling in natural images. It is commonly suggested that scaling instead results from edges, each with power spectrum 1/k2. This hypothesis is refuted by example. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

متن کاملDichoptically cancelled motion
We sought to determine whether or not motion-from-texture mechanisms have access to monocular input. Adopting a strategy used by Kolb and Braun (1995. Nature, 377, 336-338), we created drifting textures that were invisible to purely binocular processes. Monocular signals readily conveyed motions defined by local orientation and flicker. However, when left- and right-eye signals were displayed s...
متن کاملParticipation of the GABAergic system in the action of 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyrate on the OFF responses of frog retinal ganglion cells
Perfusion of dark adapted frog eyecups with the ON pathway blocker 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyrate (APB) not only abolished the ganglion cells (GCs)' ON responses and the ERG b-wave, but it markedly potentiated the OFF responses of all ON-OFF and phasic OFF GCs and the d-wave amplitude of a simultaneously recorded ERG as well. The blockade of GABA(A) and GABA(C) receptors by picrotoxin eliminated t...
متن کاملImpaired Retinal Function in Young Labrador Retriever Dogs Heterozygous for Late Onset Rod-Cone Degeneration
Xenon-flash d.c.-electroretinograms were recorded from dark adapted, rod-cone degenerate homozygote affected (n = 6), heterozygote carrier (n = 3) and control retinas (n = 4) at 3 and 4 months of age, starting at 0.6 log units below control PII threshold. One log unit higher stimuli were necessary to evoke PII in heterozygote and affected retinas compared to controls. Unique to the heterozygote...
متن کاملA new test of contour integration deficits in patients with a history of disrupted binocular experience during visual development
Previous studies have suggested that the integration of orientation information across space is impaired in amblyopia. We developed a method for quantifying orientation-domain processing using a test format that is suitable for clinical application. The test comprises a graded series of cards where each card includes a closed path (contour) of high contrast Gabor signals embedded in a random ba...
